Zero-point energy: the physics, the programs, and the claims
Unproven What these labels mean →Quantum field theory says empty space has a nonzero ground-state energy. Its effects are measured: the Casimir force (precisely measured by Lamoreaux, 1997), the Lamb shift and spontaneous emission. What is NOT established is that anyone can extract net usable energy, or thrust, from it in a repeating cycle. That gap is where Puthoff's 'vacuum engineering,' the AAWSAP DIRDs, the Navy's Pais patents and the 'suppressed free energy' claims all live.

Tier 1: established physics
| Item | Record | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| The vacuum has zero-point fluctuations; the Casimir force between plates is real | Casimir 1948; Lamoreaux measured it to ~5% (Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 5, 1997); many later confirmations | Casimir |
| You can get a one-time energy release by letting Casimir plates collapse | Robert Forward's charged-foliated-conductor scheme (1984). Like a spring, it can't be cycled for net gain | one-shot only |
| Net continuous power from the vacuum | No accepted demonstration. It would violate the thermodynamics of a ground state as usually understood | net extraction |
| The 'cosmological constant problem' (naive vacuum energy is ~10^120 too large) | An open problem. It shows that nobody fully understands vacuum energy, not that it can be tapped | open problem |
Tier 2: fringe-but-published theory
| Item | Record | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Puthoff (1989) gravity as a ZPF force; Haisch, Rueda & Puthoff (1994) inertia from the ZPF | Published (Phys. Rev. A 39, 2333). Carlip challenged the dipole analysis (PRA comment, 1993; Puthoff replied). Cole, Rueda & Danley (PRA, 2001) concluded the van der Waals-type ZPF route to Newtonian gravity does not work. Not adopted | rebutted |
| The DIRD on vacuum/spacetime-metric engineering for propulsion | Real AAWSAP product (released 2022); theory review, no hardware | DIRD exists |
Tier 3: government hardware claims
| Item | Record | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Pais patents (2016–19): inertial mass reduction craft, gravitational-wave generator, 'Pais effect' | Real patents, pushed through after NAWCAD internal fights. The patent office accepted a claim of 'operability' | patents |
| The Navy tested the Pais effect | NAWCAD: ~$508K, 2016–2019, ~1,600 hours; the effect 'could not be proven' | failed test |
Tier 4: claims (single-source or none)
| Item | Record | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Recovered craft run on vacuum energy; suppressed 'free energy' devices | Testimony (Fouché, Greer, others). No documents | suppression |
| Scientists working on it go missing or die (Eskridge etc.) | See Missing scientists pattern | pattern |
Soft-synthesis flags
- 'Casimir is real, therefore zero-point energy can power craft' skips from Tier 1 to Tier 4. The measured force is tiny (nanonewtons at micron gaps) and can't be cycled.
-
The Pais case is the best public test so far: the Navy funded it, ran the experiment, and got a null result.

Checked 2026-09-26: Lamoreaux 1997 (PRL 78, 5; torsion pendulum, 5% agreement), Forward 1984 (PRB 30, 1700; 'vacuum-fluctuation battery,' one-shot), Carlip comment and Cole–Rueda–Danley 2001 critique confirmed.
