PURSUE Release 01 (War Dept UFO files, 8 May 2026): what matters for the vault
Documented · occurred What these labels mean →The first tranche of war.gov/UFO: 158 records. They include the complete FBI 62-HQ-83894 'flying disc' file (1947–68, with newly declassified pages), 1940s Air Materiel Command / AAF flying-disc files, SHAEF 'foo fighter' messages (1944–45), a 1952 Samford memo, a 1963 National Aeronautics and Space Council memo on 'the space alien race question,' five State Dept cables, NASA transcripts, and 2020–25 military mission reports, plus recent FBI 302s. Among them: the 2023 'Western US Event' (federal agents saw 'orbs launching orbs') and a 2025 senior-intelligence-official orb chase near a test site. Most historical items were already public in part. The value is completeness and fresh pages.

Items most relevant to our threads
| Record | What it says | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| FBI 62-HQ-83894 §5: Hottel memo (Mar 22, 1950) | 'Three so-called flying saucers had been recovered in New Mexico… each occupied by three bodies… 3 feet tall' (secondhand via a DC police investigator) | Same section: Denver FBI traces a matching tale to Silas Newton ('found' a disc with 16 three-foot occupants) and George Koehler, around Scully's Behind the Flying Saucers (1950). The Aztec hoax chain is in the same file |
| FBI 62-HQ-83894 §6 (Oct 13, 1950) | Hoover orders LA to check whether Frank Scully is 'the Frank Scully… engaged in Communist activities' | The FBI treated Scully as a security question, not a source |
| FBI 62-HQ-83894 §4 (Mar 22, 1949) | 10+ 'green fireball' incidents since Dec 5, 1948 in the Los Alamos–Las Vegas–West Texas triangle; the Army says 'ultimately… a natural explanation'; also 'may be connected with secret experiments… by some U.S. Government' agency | Primary support for the nuclear-site pattern (Bluegill Triple Prime UFO, Nolan) and for 'our own tests' explanations |
| FBI Serial 153 (Knoxville) | July 1947 photos of 'flying saucers' over Oak Ridge | Nuclear-site sightings from the start |
| FBI §3 | AMC lab report on a recovered 'disc' debris lot: 1910 speaker diaphragm, capacitor parts, magnetic ring, 'no connection with any AMC project' | A documented 'crash debris' case that turned out to be junk |
| 59_64634 (Jul 28, 1952) | Gen. Samford to State (via Nitze): 'credible observers are reporting the incredible'; the threat exists 'only because they are not understood' | Clean primary quote from the July 1952 DC flap |
| 59_214434 (Jul 18, 1963) | NASC to State: 'Thoughts on the Space Alien Race Question.' Policy if alien intelligence is found; the author doesn't side with 'flying saucer advocates' | Real USG contingency thinking (Kennedy-era), with no UFO acceptance |
| 331 SHAEF (1944–45) | 'Night phenomena (foofighters),' 415th Night Fighter Squadron | Foo fighters were taken seriously as possible German weapons |
| State cables 001–005 | PNG 1985 overflights; Kazakhstan 1994 (747 crew, 'bullet' object, photos); Tbilisi 2001 (Russians blame 'UFOs' for a bombing = 'bold lie'); Turkmenistan 2004; Mexico 2003 congressional testimony | The 2001 cable is documented use of 'UFO' as a cover story |
| 255 NASA file | The French COMETA report (1999) plus a Carol Rosin letter (von Braun's former spokesperson) | Shows what NASA kept on file, not an endorsement |
| Western US Event (2023) + USPER 302 (2025) | Federal agents: orange 'mother' orbs releasing 2–4 red orbs; a large glowing orb by a rock pinnacle; a 2025 helicopter chase of a 'super-hot' orb after a test near a site with a 'cavern' entrance | Current, official, multi-witness orb reports. No technical data released |
| FBI Sept 2023 'test site' 302s | Bronze ellipsoid 130–195 ft 'materializing' from light (FBI lab composite) | Tie to test-range sightings (Hidden Wing (UAP Gerb) context) |
Caveats
- Metabunk flagged mismatched PDFs and video pairings, stripped telemetry, and recycled public material (e.g. Gemini 7 audio).
- 'Unresolved' in this release means insufficient data, not anomalous.
