What's documented
- May 1945: Operation Overcast starts. Renamed Paperclip in 1946 (for the paperclips marking chosen files).
- Sept 1946: Truman approves it, officially excluding active Nazis and war criminals.
- In practice, JIOA officials (director Bosquet Wev) rewrote security dossiers to remove Nazi affiliations so candidates would pass. Documented in the JIOA records and Jacobsen.
- About 1,600 people over the life of the program. Main destinations: Fort Bliss/White Sands, then Huntsville (Redstone Arsenal → NASA Marshall), Wright Field (Wright-Patterson), and Randolph Field (aviation medicine).

Claims layered on top
| Claim | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Paperclip scientists got us to the Moon | Largely true | Von Braun, Rudolph and Debus led the Saturn V and launch work |
| Nitrogen fertilizer came from Paperclip | No | The Haber-Bosch process dates to 1909–1913, decades before the Nazis. Fritz Haber was Jewish and fled Germany in 1933. (Nazi-era I.G. Farben did run it at scale, and Farben's Ambros is tangential, but fertilizer isn't a Paperclip story.) |
| Paperclip scientists reverse-engineered UFO tech | No document | Wright Field did receive Paperclip engineers and is the Roswell-debris site in lore, but no record connects the two |
| Paperclip doctors fed MKUltra | Partly | Blome and Schreiber worked on Army/CIA interrogation and chemical programs (Camp King, Randolph); a direct MKUltra subproject link is not shown |
Ties into other threads
- Huntsville: von Braun's team built Huntsville's aerospace base (Redstone, NASA Marshall), later home to Amy Eskridge's institute. Same town, 70 years apart; soft.
- Wright-Patterson again: Paperclip engineers at Wright Field, the 1956 gravity program, AFRL/McCasland.
- Bell Aircraft: Dornberger at Bell, and Bell is one of the 1950s gravity-research firms (Publication silence as signal).
- Paperclip and Gehlen Organization are the two halves of the same 1945–46 decision: use the enemy's experts and hide their pasts. See Credential erasure test: here the government did scrub records, and it's documented.
