CIA program of behavior-modification and interrogation research: drugs (especially LSD), hypnosis, sensory deprivation, electroshock, often on people who didn't know or consent. 149+ subprojects at about 80 institutions, including 44 universities, hospitals and prisons. Most records were destroyed in 1973; about 20,000 financial documents survived and surfaced in 1977.

What's documented
- Precursors: Project Bluebird (1950) → Artichoke (1951): interrogation, 'special interrogation' and amnesia research, partly in Europe at sites like Camp King.
- 13 Apr 1953: DCI Allen Dulles approves MKUltra, a week after his 'brain warfare' speech at Princeton.
- Scale: 149 subprojects; about 80 institutions (44 colleges and universities, 15 research foundations or chemical/pharma companies, 12 hospitals or clinics, 3 prisons). Many researchers didn't know the CIA was the funder (cut-outs such as the Society for the Investigation of Human Ecology, and the Geschickter Fund).
- 1973: DCI Richard Helms orders MKUltra files destroyed.
- 1975: Rockefeller Commission and Church Committee expose it.
- 1977: about 20,000 pages of financial and administrative records, misfiled and so missed by the destruction order, are found via a FOIA request (John Marks). Senate hearing, 3 Aug 1977 (Sen. Kennedy).
- Successor: MKSearch (to 1972).

| Frank Olson |
Army biological-warfare scientist (Camp Detrick); dosed with LSD without his knowledge, Nov 1953 |
Died in a fall from the Statler Hotel, 28 Nov 1953. 1975: the government admitted the dosing and paid his family. 1994 exhumation found head injuries the family says point to murder; still disputed |
| Donald Ewen Cameron |
Allan Memorial Institute, Montreal; 'depatterning' and 'psychic driving' |
Canadian patients later won settlements |
| George Hunter White |
Federal narcotics agent; ran CIA safehouses where unwitting men were dosed (Midnight Climax) |
Documented in the 1977 records |
| Harold Abramson |
LSD researcher; saw Olson days before his death |

Paperclip doctors on Army/CIA interrogation work (Artichoke era) |
Documented for Artichoke/Camp King; a direct MKUltra subproject isn't shown |
| Whitey Bulger |
Took LSD as a prisoner volunteer at Atlanta Penitentiary (1957) and later wrote that it was CIA mind control |
His account; the study itself is documented |
| Ted Kaczynski |
Subject of Henry Murray's harsh Harvard study (1959–62) |
Link to MKUltra funding not documented; widely claimed |
| Harold Puthoff / SRI |
CIA-funded remote-viewing research from 1972 (later 'Stargate') |
Same CIA science directorate and era; a separate program |

Why |
| CIA dosed unwitting Americans |
Yes |
Its own records, the 1977 hearing, Olson |
| MKUltra created 'Manchurian candidates' |
No evidence it worked |
The records show attempts and failures, not a working programmable assassin |
| Olson was murdered |
Contested |
1994 forensics suggest a blow to the head before the fall; no charges; the family's civil suit was dismissed (2013) |
| Kaczynski was made by MKUltra |
Link missing |
Murray's study existed; CIA funding of that study isn't documented |
| The destroyed files hid the worst of it |
By definition |
Only financial records survived. The destruction itself is proven |

Bibliographies on 'non-lethal personnel incapacitation' (DOC_0000173614–17), citing Wright-Patterson acoustic studies (1953, 1962), microwave effects on the eye, and 'Soviet Views on the Biologic Effects of Microwaves' (1968). So the CIA was collecting RF/acoustic bio-effects research in this era, the same body of work DIRD 26/D128 draws on in 2010 |
| EG&G |
1 key doc |
DOC_0000163363: a 1972 unsolicited proposal from EG&G's Albuquerque Division to research 'monitoring living plants': plant-to-man communication, an intruder alarm, and a 'psychology tool and mental illness monitor.' The proposal's staff bio includes an ex-Los Alamos Test Division physicist who worked at Eniwetok and the Nevada Test Site |
Why EG&G matters: EG&G was the main Nevada Test Site / Area 51 contractor, and it's the company Bob Lazar says he was hired through. Here it is pitching fringe biology research to the CIA from Albuquerque in 1972. It's a documented example of the Area 51 contractor working the 'edge science' side of CIA interest. Soft pattern: Albuquerque is also where McCasland lived.
Ties into other threads
- Records destruction by the institution (Helms, 1973) is a second proven case for Credential erasure test, after Paperclip's dossier rewriting, and it links to Elizondo's destroyed emails.
- Microwave 'voices': DIRD 26 (D128) documents RF-induced hearing; the CIA's interest in behavioral control ran through the same decades. See Schizophrenia explanation history. Pattern only.
- The same men, again: Dulles approved MKUltra, used Gehlen, ran Sunrise, and sat on the Warren Commission.
