1980 October Surprise and the House task force report (3 Jan 1993)
Documented · occurred Handling What these labels mean →The allegation investigated: that the Reagan campaign (William Casey) arranged with Iran to hold the 52 US hostages until after the 1980 election; they were released minutes after Reagan's inauguration. Senate special counsel (Nov 1992): probably no deal, but 'the totality of the evidence does suggest' Casey 'conducted informal, clandestine, and potentially dangerous efforts' (full text checked 2026-09-27; 'probably' and 'to monitor' were paraphrase). The House Task Force (Lee Hamilton) report, published 3 Jan 1993 in the Congressional Record: 'virtually no credible evidence'. Rep. Mervyn Dymally refused to sign and filed a dissent on the Madrid meeting ('just because phones ring and planes fly doesn't mean someone is there'), saying Hamilton warned he'd 'come down hard' on him.
