J. Allen Hynek
Documented What these labels mean →Ohio State / Northwestern astronomer. Air Force scientific consultant to Project Sign, Grudge and Blue Book (1948–1969). Started as a debunker ('utterly ridiculous,' 1948). He became notorious for the March 1966 Michigan 'swamp gas' press conference, where he said it explained only part of the Dexter/Hillsdale reports. He grew critical of Blue Book, coined the 'close encounters' scale (The UFO Experience, 1972), founded CUFOS (1973), and was science adviser (and cameo) on Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). Died 1986.

Why he matters for the vault
- He's the inside witness to how Blue Book worked. Verified wording: his Oct 7, 1968 letter to Col. Raymond Sleeper (FTD), reprinted in The UFO Experience appendix, called the effort 'totally inadequate,' the staff 'grossly inadequate,' communication with outside scientists 'appalling,' and its statistics 'nothing less than a travesty.' He passed on one wag's nickname for it: the 'Society for the Explanation of the Uninvestigated.' ('Public-relations exercise' is a later paraphrase, not a confirmed Hynek quote.)
- Pattern: an establishment scientist whose conversion came from case exposure, not from a single dramatic sighting.
