Betty and Barney Hill abduction (New Hampshire, Sept 19–20, 1961)
Unproven What these labels mean →The template for modern abduction accounts. What's solid: the Hills reported a light following their car on US-3 near Lincoln, NH, reached home about two hours later than expected, and filed a report that went to Project Blue Book within days. Everything about being taken aboard came later: Betty's dreams (weeks later) and hypnosis with Dr. Benjamin Simon (Jan–June 1964). Simon himself concluded the abduction was most likely a fantasy (Barney absorbing Betty's dreams), not a memory.

Most plausible core (documented at the time)
| Item | Record | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| A bright light followed their car; they stopped near Indian Head; Barney saw it with binoculars | Reported within days (Sept 1961); Blue Book file | sighting report |
| Arrived home ~2 hours later than expected ('missing time') | Their early account. Later researchers dispute the timeline math | missing time |
| Shiny circles on the car trunk; a compass reacted | Their account | physical traces |
| Pease AFB radar picked up an unknown that night | A Pease radar observation appears in the Blue Book file. Tying it to the Hills is inferred | Pease radar |
Later layers (weaker)
| Item | Record | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Taken aboard, medical exam, 'needle in the navel' | Betty's dreams (Oct–Nov 1961), then hypnosis in 1964 | abduction |
| Wraparound-eyed greys | Barney first drew them Feb 22, 1964, 12 days after the Outer Limits 'Bellero Shield' aired with a similar alien (Kottmeyer). Betty's early dreams described human-looking men | possible contamination |
| Betty's star map = Zeta Reticuli | Marjorie Fish's 1969 match used stellar data that later proved wrong. Fish later retracted it | star map retracted |
| Hypnotist's view | Dr. Benjamin Simon: most likely a shared fantasy, not a memory | Simon's opinion |
Why it matters
- It set the template: missing time, hypnosis, exam, star map. Later cases (including Strieber and Mack's patients) are hard to separate from it.
