Allagash abductions (Maine, Aug 1976; told 1988–93)
Unproven What these labels mean →Four art students on a canoe trip (twins Jim and Jack Weiner, Charlie Foltz, Chuck Rak) saw a bright light over Eagle Lake, and their fire burned down unusually fast. That sighting was told contemporaneously. The abduction, with a medical exam and specimen taking, emerged only after 1988 through MUFON hypnosis, in Raymond Fowler's 1993 book. All four passed polygraphs (1989–90). In 2016 Chuck Rak said the abduction part was invented and that they had been using hashish. The other three dispute him.

Notes
| Item | Record | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| A light over the lake; a campfire that 'should have' lasted hours burned out | Earliest account, told before any hypnosis | sighting only |
| Abduction, exam, 'samples' | Recovered via MUFON hypnosis 1988–89, 12 years later, after Jim Weiner attended a UFO talk | abduction |
| All four passed polygraphs | Reported by Fowler | polygraphs |
| 2016: Chuck Rak says the abduction was fabricated, they were high, and money was a motive | Rak's public statement; the other three reject it | recanted by one witness |
Why it matters
- A textbook case of how a contemporaneous 'lights' sighting grows into an abduction through later hypnosis. The recantation makes it a useful test of polygraph weight.
