The Book of Enoch, the Watchers and the Nephilim (Prof. Jeremy Hultin on Camp Gagnon, Aug 2024)
Documented · occurred What these labels mean →Jeremy Hultin (Union Theological Seminary, noncanonical Jewish and Christian texts) gives the scholarly baseline. Enoch 'walked with God… and was not' (Gen 5), one of two biblical figures who don't die normally, so multiple texts were pseudonymously attributed to him. 1 Enoch's Watchers (the 'vigilant ones'), led by chiefs who swear an oath on Mount Hermon, take human wives; their offspring the Giants devour the earth and provoke the Flood; the giants' spirits survive as evil spirits. Genesis 6:1–4 is a four-verse compressed version of the same tradition. 1 Enoch and Jubilees were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls (Qumran, pre-Christian); 1 Enoch is quoted in Jude (1:14–15 ≈ 1 Enoch 1:9) but is canonical only in the Ethiopian Orthodox church. Hultin also covers the solar vs. lunar calendar dispute and the Revelation visions.
