Banks behind fascists, the Mafia and cartels (1933–2012): seven cases
A comparative note (research assembled with claude.ai; checked here). The common thread: each case is documented only because disclosure was forced (wartime seizure, a police investigation, a congressional subpoena, a DOJ prosecution, or a collapse), never by voluntary transparency, and senior individuals rarely faced consequences. The Vatican Bank (IOR) is the evidentiary outlier: the only institution whose own archives remain closed, so the record is Italian police and court files plus journalism.

Notes
| Case | Documented | Handling | Tag |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vatican Bank / Sindona | Palermo police chief Boris Giuliano found cheques showing Sindona recycling Mafia heroin proceeds via the IOR to his Amincor Bank (Switzerland); the Mafia killed Giuliano on 21 Jul 1979. The Holy See lost ~$30M in Sindona's Franklin National collapse (1974); Sindona died in prison after poisoned coffee (1986) | Evidence from Italian police and courts only | Giuliano finding |
| Banco Ambrosiano / Calvi | The IOR was Ambrosiano's main shareholder; Marcinkus (IOR) sat on Ambrosiano Overseas (Nassau); collapsed 1982; Calvi found hanged under Blackfriars Bridge, London (Jun 1982) | IOR paid $224M (1984) 'in recognition of moral involvement', expressly not an admission of liability | payment without liability |
| Union Banking Corp. (BBH) | Prescott Bush a director; fronted for Fritz Thyssen's interests; seized 20 Oct 1942 under the Trading with the Enemy Act | Wartime seizure; Alien Property Custodian record | UBC seizure |
| Schröder (J.H. Stein, Cologne) | Kurt von Schröder hosted the 4 Jan 1933 Hitler–Papen meeting in Cologne that led toward Hitler's chancellorship. Correction flag: Kurt von Schröder was a partner at the Cologne bank J.H. Stein, a separate entity from the London/NY J. Henry Schröder banks the claude.ai summary cites (verified: Wikipedia, Kurt von Schröder was a partner in J.H. Stein & Co.; ties to the J. Henry Schroder Banking Corp. NY are asserted mainly by Sutton/Mullins, which are partisan secondary sources). Whether the London/NY arms funded the Nazi party isn't established here | His own postwar account (GHDI) | Schröder meeting |
| BCCI | See the BCCI note: Noriega, Medellín, Saddam, Abu Nidal; CIA accounts | Collapse plus Kerry–Brown | BCCI |
| HSBC | Admitted (2012 DPA) that at least $881M of Sinaloa/Norte del Valle cartel money moved through; sanctions violations (Iran, Libya, Sudan, Cuba, Burma); verified: HSBC USA failed to monitor >$670B in wires from HSBC Mexico, 2006–09, plus >$9.4B in physical-dollar purchases | $1.92B penalty; no individuals charged; a House report says senior DOJ overruled line prosecutors | too big to jail |
| Riggs Bank | Accounts for Pinochet and Equatorial Guinea's Obiang; guilty plea (2005) | Absorbed by PNC (13 May 2005) | Riggs absorbed; guilty plea Jan 2005 to one felony count (failure to file SARs), $16M fine, $41M total penalties (WaPo 2005-01-28) |
Caveats
- Sindona/Calvi Mafia–IOR laundering chains rest on Italian judicial and police records; the IOR's own books are unavailable.
- Calvi's death (Blackfriars Bridge, 18 Jun 1982): first ruled suicide. In 1997 Rome prosecutors charged Mafia figure Pippo Calò and Flavio Carboni with murder. On 6 Jun 2007 all five defendants were acquitted for insufficient evidence (verified: NBC/Al Jazeera 2007).
