USS Liberty attack (8 Jun 1967)

Documented ยท occurred What these labels mean โ†’

During the Six-Day War, Israeli aircraft and torpedo boats attacked the US signals-intelligence ship USS *Liberty* in international waters off Sinai: 34 Americans killed, 171โ€“173 wounded. Israel called it mistaken identity and paid compensation. The US Navy Court of Inquiry (RADM Isaac Kidd, counsel Capt. Ward Boston) was given about a week and found mistaken identity. In a 2004 sworn declaration, Boston said Kidd told him LBJ and McNamara ordered that conclusion 'despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary'. The Moorer Commission (2003; ex-CJCS Adm. Thomas Moorer), entered into the Congressional Record 7 Oct 2004, found a deliberate attack after ~8 hours of surveillance and an 'official cover-up without precedent in American naval history'. NSA intercept tapes were partially released in 2003. The dispute over intent continues.
