Pike wrote in an 1875 letter that he 'took my obligations from white men'

Unproven What these labels mean →

Disputed attribution. A line attributed to Albert Pike in an 1875 letter, usually given as 'I took my obligations to white men, not to Negroes. When I have to accept Negroes as brothers or leave Masonry, I shall leave it', is widely reprinted, but no original letter has been located in the sources checked, and two wordings circulate ('to' vs the source's 'from' white men). Unproven: the attribution is neither confirmed nor shown false. Not part of the Taxil/Mazzini hoax corpus.
