22 of the Washington Monument's memorial stones are Masonic

Unproven What these labels mean →

The source says 22 of the Washington Monument's memorial stones are Masonic. The counts in print disagree: NPS chief historian Gary Scott (Scottish Rite Journal, June 1997) gives 22, from 14 Grand Lodges and 8 individual lodges; The Builder (July 1915) lists 24 'From Masonic Bodies' out of 151 stones; our tally of the NPS memorial-stone list finds 21 from Masonic lodges and grand lodges (20 if Florida's unlabeled 'Grand Lodge' stone is not Masonic). The figure depends on who counts and when; no single count is established.

The NPS does not give a Masonic count. The figure comes from Masonic publications, which have not yet been fetched. A tally of the NPS Appendix D list finds 21 stones from Masonic lodges and grand lodges (20 if Florida's unlabeled "Grand Lodge" stone is not Masonic), after excluding eight Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F.) "Grand Lodge" stones.
